802.11b is part of the 802.11 family of specifications for wireless local area networks (WLAN) developed by a working group of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE). Also referred to as 802.11 High Rate or Wi-Fi, 802.11b is an extension to 802.11 that applies to wireless LAN and provides 11 Mbps transmission in the 2.4 GHz band.
